Derrick was raised in Boise, Idaho, graduating from Boise High School in 1982. In 1986, he graduated from the University of Idaho with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and minors in Communications and History. Derrick attended law school at the University of Utah, College of Law and following graduation in 1989 returned home to Boise, Idaho to practice.
Derrick's early practice was almost exclusively limited to litigation, including numerous jury trials throughout Southern Idaho. Soon, however, his practice grew to include a number of mortgage lending clients. Today Derrick represents numerous local and national lending institutions and businesses in the areas of foreclosures, collections, evictions and bankruptcy. He is also frequent lecturer on creditor's rights in bankruptcy and serves on the local rules committee for the Idaho Bankruptcy Court.
Admitted to practice in all courts of the State of Idaho and the United States District Courts of Idaho, Derrick is a member of the Idaho State Bar Association, participating in the Commercial Law and Bankruptcy sections. Derrick is a recipient of the Idaho State Bar Denise O'Donnell-Day pro-bono award and has also been honored with the Professionalism Award from the Idaho State Bar's Commercial Law and Bankruptcy Section.
Derrick considers himself fortunate to practice in his hometown and he remains dedicated to improving the community in which he was raised. In addition to having coached soccer, baseball, and basketball teams, Derrick volunteers as a board member on the Bishop Kelly High School Foundation, the Counsel of Advisors for the Elks Rehabilitation Hospital, St. John's Cathedral and is former president of the Board of Directors of the Children's Home Society of Idaho.
Derrick protects the rights of his clients by helping them navigate the ever changing bankruptcy current. He provides national lending institutions with advice concerning the obligations of Idaho State Law and by identifying potential problems in lending collection efforts throughout the state of Idaho. Derrick practices statewide and has enjoyed the opportunity to work with judges and clerks in every judicial district in nearly every county of Idaho.
